Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia rescheduled for December

Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup has been postponed by almost a year, with the tournament now scheduled to begin on 23 December 2027 and conclude on 21 January 2028.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced the revised dates on Tuesday, citing exceptional circumstances that had made it necessary to change the original schedule. The new dates will still require approval from FIFA.

The competition had initially been scheduled to run from 7 January to 5 February 2027, with matches taking place in Riyadh, Jeddah and Alkhobar. It will remain in Saudi Arabia, but the delay represents a significant change to the country’s preparations for its first-ever hosting of the continental tournament.

In its announcement, the AFC said: “Exceptional circumstances have been created for the organisation and delivery of the Competition as originally scheduled, making the postponement necessary in the interest of all participating teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders.”

The decision follows weeks of uncertainty surrounding the tournament. Concerns intensified after Australian outlet AAP Sports reported on 13 October that attacks affecting airports across Saudi Arabia had raised questions about the country’s ability to stage the competition as planned. Local organisers had previously assured Arab News that preparations remained on schedule.

The disruption has also affected domestic football. Five Saudi Pro League fixtures have been postponed because of logistical difficulties, including the high-profile meeting between Al-Ahli and Al-Nassr. The latter faced a potential 12-hour road journey from Riyadh to Jeddah.

The AFC Champions League Elite has experienced fewer disruptions, although Al-Nassr’s Matchday 3 fixture against Al-Wasl was also postponed.

For Saudi Arabia’s national team, the revised schedule brings both an opportunity and a challenge. Georgios Donis’ side had built considerable momentum after winning the Gulf Cup for the first time in 22 years, raising expectations ahead of the Asian Cup.

The extended preparation period gives the team more time to develop, but maintaining that momentum until the tournament arrives will be a different challenge.
