Aston Villa ended a painful 30-year trophy drought in style with a commanding 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg to lift the UEFA Europa League trophy.
Emery Secures Fifth Europa League Title in Istanbul
Unai Emery’s side completely dominated the Bundesliga outfit at Beşiktaş Park in Istanbul. First-half stunners from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendía gave Villa total control of the showpiece event.
Morgan Rogers then sealed the historic triumph with a clinical second-half strike. Consequently, the Birmingham club has secured its second major European title, coming 44 years after their legendary 1982 European Cup victory.
Nine members of that iconic 1982 squad were present in Turkey to witness the monumental achievement. This victory marks a stunning transformation under Emery, who replaced Steven Gerrard in November 2022.
He took over a struggling squad sitting just three points above the Premier League relegation zone. He has since transformed them into regular top-five contenders and, now, European champions. Lifelong Villa supporter Prince William was also seen celebrating wildly at the final whistle.
A Watershed Moment for the Villans
The trophy represents a watershed moment for a club that suffered relegation to the Championship exactly a decade ago. Villa can now boast a major continental trophy alongside their second Champions League qualification in three seasons.
This success will heavily aid their upcoming summer recruitment strategy by providing clear evidence of a winning project. The primary challenge for the former Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain manager will be maintaining these elite standards.
Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu did well to keep out an early Rogers drive during a tense opening period. Nicolas Höfler fired wide in his final professional match before retirement, but Villa quickly took over. Tielemans broke the deadlock four minutes before the interval by brilliantly volleying home from a clever short-corner routine.
Buendía added a spectacular second in first-half stoppage time, curling a beautiful 18-yard effort beyond the reaching Atubolu. Rogers then put the result beyond doubt just before the hour mark by poking home a near-post cross from Buendía.
Amadou Onana later hit the post as the dominant English side cruised across the finish line. Villa will conclude their domestic campaign against Manchester City this Sunday.
