Barca crisis deepens as Bartomeu says he’ll resign if Messi stays

Camp Nou, Barcelona

Barcelona’s crisis triggered by Messi’s transfer bombshell has deepened as more supporters took to the street to protest the current state of affairs in the Catalonian club for a straight second day. Some of them demanded current Barca defender Gerrard Pique to succeed Josep Maria Bartomeu as president.

Compared to the agitated mood of yesterday, today Barca supporters are little relieved and optimistic as their president expressed his willingness to resign and bring back the normalcy back to the Camp Nou. They hope the six time Ballon d’Ore winner will change his mind and stay with them.

Looking for a solution to Messi’s demand to leave the club, Barcelona directors had met at the Camp Nou on Wednesday evening while a group of angry protestors gathered outside the gates of the stadium complex to vent out their frustration with the ongoing crisis. The protestors were targeting the under pressure president Bartomeu as they chanted and demanded he resign as president.

The La Liga giants are facing an unprecedented crisis after the six times Ballon d’Ore winner, their icon Messi handed a transfer request as the club crashed out of Champions league with a humiliating 8-2 defeat by the eventual champions Bayern Munich.

The local security were unable to stop the embattled crowd as the angry mob broke into the grounds of the Camp Nou demanding action from the Blaugrana board. Police had to step in to move the protestors back towards the street.

However today Bartomeu said he is willing to step down as Barcelona president if  Messi changes his mind and decides to stay with the Catalanians. However the reports suggest that the Argentine has already decided and it is irreversible. Also the statement of the embattled president is believed to cool the supporters who had made their displeasure through twitter campaigns and other online protests in the wake Covid-19 restrictions for large scale gatherings and protest meets.
