Chelsea injury news vs Brighton has provided some encouraging updates ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting at Stamford Bridge, with Moises Caicedo, Levi Colwill and Geovany Quenda all in contention to feature.
Xabi Alonso’s side will be looking to make it three competitive wins in a row when Brighton & Hove Albion visit Stamford Bridge on Sunday, 30 August. Kick-off is scheduled for 2pm BST.
Chelsea began their Premier League campaign with a 3-2 victory over Fulham before following that up with a 2-0 Carabao Cup win against Luton Town on Thursday.
However, Alonso’s team selection for the Brighton game could depend heavily on the fitness of several players who have either missed recent matches or been carefully managed during a busy opening week.
Here is the latest Chelsea injury news vs Brighton.
Will Moises Caicedo play against Brighton?
The biggest question concerns Moises Caicedo, who has yet to feature competitively for Chelsea this season after suffering a setback in training.
The Ecuador international missed the opening-day victory against Fulham and was subsequently ruled out of Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie against Luton.
There is now some optimism that the midfielder could return against his former club.
Alonso said Caicedo was expected to train on Friday and that Chelsea would then assess whether he was ready to be involved against Brighton. However, the manager stopped short of confirming his availability.
“We are hopeful that he can be involved [against Brighton]. But we need to check. No decision has been made.”
That makes Caicedo the player to watch most closely before the teams are announced.
His potential return would be particularly important for Alonso. Chelsea used Reece James and Romeo Lavia in midfield during the opening Premier League fixture, while Caicedo’s ability to protect the defence and recover possession would give the new head coach another option.
The 24-year-old was also among Chelsea’s leading performers during pre-season, contributing one goal and one assist while playing 227 minutes.
Levi Colwill injury update
There is better clarity over Levi Colwill, who was left out of the squad for the Carabao Cup victory over Luton.
Alonso confirmed that there was no new injury problem with the defender.
Colwill is instead being managed carefully following the serious injury he suffered last season. Alonso stressed that Chelsea do not want to rush him through a demanding period of the campaign.
The defender is expected to train ahead of Brighton and remains in contention for Sunday’s match.
That is significant for Alonso because Colwill started the opening Premier League match against Fulham and remains an important part of the manager’s defensive plans.
Chelsea’s squad depth will also give Alonso some flexibility if he decides Colwill needs to be protected for another game.
Geovany Quenda also available for Chelsea
Geovany Quenda is another player whose absence against Luton initially raised questions.
However, Alonso’s explanation was reassuring.
The Chelsea head coach confirmed that Quenda was also being managed during a particularly busy week rather than being left out because of a fresh injury. The Portugal international is expected to train and can therefore be considered for the Brighton fixture.
Quenda is one of the more intriguing selection decisions for Alonso.
The teenager is entering his first Premier League season with Chelsea, and his versatility gives Alonso another option in wide areas. Chelsea have also listed him as part of their first-team squad for the 2026/27 campaign.
Wesley Fofana is available again
There is also a straightforward boost for Chelsea in defence.
Wesley Fofana will be available for selection after completing his two-match suspension.
Fofana missed the opening Premier League fixture and the Carabao Cup victory against Luton, but his suspension has now been served.
His return gives Alonso another option at the back as Chelsea prepare for a Brighton side that began the Premier League season impressively.
Jordan Henderson remains a doubt
The picture is less positive for Jordan Henderson.
The summer signing has yet to receive the green light to return following the injury he suffered during the World Cup.
Alonso indicated that Chelsea are waiting for Henderson to be cleared to play, suggesting the midfielder is unlikely to be rushed back against Brighton.
His absence means Alonso still has to manage his midfield options carefully, particularly if Caicedo is not deemed ready to return.
Chelsea injury list vs Brighton
At this stage, the Chelsea picture can be summarised as follows:
| Player | Brighton status |
|---|---|
| Moises Caicedo | Could return, fitness to be assessed |
| Levi Colwill | In contention |
| Geovany Quenda | In contention |
| Wesley Fofana | Available after suspension |
| Jordan Henderson | Not yet cleared to return |
Chelsea’s latest official squad information also confirms Caicedo, Colwill, Quenda and Fofana among the first-team options for the new season.
What does it mean for Chelsea’s Brighton line-up?
The biggest decision remains Caicedo.
If the Ecuadorian is cleared to play, Alonso has considerably more flexibility in midfield and could restore one of his most important defensive midfielders to the starting XI.
Colwill and Quenda are less concerning from an injury perspective, with Alonso’s comments suggesting their omission against Luton was primarily about managing their workload.
Chelsea also have the benefit of Fofana returning from suspension, meaning Alonso has more defensive options than he had for the opening league game.
Brighton, meanwhile, arrive at Stamford Bridge after an emphatic 4-0 victory over Aston Villa on the opening weekend, making Sunday’s fixture a much tougher test than the scoreline of Chelsea’s cup victory against Luton might suggest.
For Alonso, then, the final training session could be crucial.
If Caicedo gets the green light and Colwill and Quenda complete their preparations without problems, Chelsea could have most of their preferred options available for their first home Premier League match of the season.
The final Chelsea team news should become clearer when Alonso names his starting XI before the 2pm BST kick-off on Sunday.
