England secured their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after overcoming hosts Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling Round of 16 encounter at the iconic Azteca Stadium on Monday. Despite playing the final stages with ten men and facing relentless pressure from the home crowd, Thomas Tuchel’s side held on to seal one of their most memorable World Cup victories.
The match, which was delayed by an hour due to severe weather in Mexico City, began with both teams creating opportunities before England seized control late in the first half. Jude Bellingham produced a moment of brilliance by scoring twice in the space of just 98 seconds, giving England a commanding advantage. His first goal came after being picked out by Bukayo Saka, while Harry Kane set him up for the second with a perfectly weighted pass.
Mexico responded before the interval through Julián Quiñones, whose powerful finish reduced the deficit and reignited the atmosphere inside the packed stadium.
England’s task became considerably more difficult shortly after the restart when defender Jarell Quansah received a straight red card for a high challenge on Jesús Gallardo. However, the visitors restored their two-goal cushion six minutes later after Anthony Gordon was fouled inside the penalty area by goalkeeper Raúl Rangel. Kane converted the resulting spot-kick with confidence.
The hosts refused to surrender and were awarded a penalty midway through the second half after Kane was adjudged to have fouled Brian Gutiérrez inside the box. Veteran striker Raúl Jiménez calmly converted to make it 3-2, setting up a tense finish.
With England reduced to ten men, Mexico launched wave after wave of attacks during an extended period of stoppage time. Tuchel responded by introducing defensive reinforcements and switching to a five-man backline, allowing his side to withstand the late onslaught and preserve their narrow lead.
Bellingham’s outstanding display earned him Player of the Match honours, but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was equally influential. The England goalkeeper produced several crucial saves, including two outstanding stops from Jiménez, while commanding his penalty area with authority throughout the contest.
The victory sends England into the quarter-finals, where they will face Norway in what promises to be another highly anticipated knockout clash.
