FIFA Suspends Balogun’s One-Match Ban, Trump thanks FIFA

United States striker Folarin Balogun will be available for his side’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 encounter against Belgium after FIFA suspended his automatic one-match suspension, allowing the forward to return immediately.

Balogun was shown a straight red card during the USA’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 after a challenge on defender Tarik Muharemović. Under FIFA regulations, a straight red card normally results in an automatic one-match suspension.

However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced that the suspension has been placed on hold for a one-year probationary period. Should Balogun commit another offence of a similar nature during that time, the suspended sanction will be reinstated in addition to any new disciplinary action.

The decision means the 25-year-old striker is eligible to face Belgium in one of the most anticipated Round of 16 fixtures of the tournament.

The news was welcomed by the United States camp. Captain Christian Pulisic revealed the squad learned of FIFA’s decision while travelling to training, describing Balogun as “super happy” after hearing he would be available. Pulisic also maintained that the original red card had been overly harsh.

Balogun has been one of the standout performers for Mauricio Pochettino’s side during the tournament. The former Arsenal forward has scored three goals, including the opener against Bosnia before his dismissal, and has played a crucial role in the co-hosts’ impressive World Cup campaign.

The ruling has also generated significant debate. Critics have questioned the unprecedented nature of suspending an automatic World Cup ban after the tournament had already begun, particularly given that FIFA does not operate a formal appeal process for red cards during the competition.

The decision drew attention beyond football as well. US President Donald Trump praised FIFA on social media, calling the move the correction of “a great injustice.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio had also previously urged football authorities to review the dismissal, arguing that the sending-off was unjustified.

While FIFA has previously suspended disciplinary sanctions—most notably allowing Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo to feature at the 2026 World Cup after reducing the remainder of a suspension from the qualifying campaign—Balogun’s case is viewed differently because it concerns a red card issued during the tournament itself.

The decision has sparked questions over the consistency of FIFA’s disciplinary process, especially when compared to previous World Cup cases in which players received extended suspensions for dangerous challenges. Nevertheless, Balogun’s availability provides a significant boost for the United States as they prepare to face Belgium with a place in the quarter-finals on the line.
