A decade after making his final appearance as a player at Yankee Stadium for New York City FC, Andoni Iraola returned to the Bronx as Liverpool manager, guiding a youthful side to a 1-0 pre-season victory over Wrexham.
A crowd of 42,204 turned out to watch the Premier League side continue their pre-season momentum, secured by a single goal from Rio Ngumoha. The fixture concluded a frantic 24 hours for Liverpool, whose travel plans were severely disrupted on Tuesday when severe weather forced the cancellation of their flight from their Chicago training base. The squad were stranded on the runway before eventually flying into New York on Wednesday afternoon, hours before kick-off.
Academy Stars Seize Pre-Season Chance
Following a 4-2 win against Sunderland last weekend, Iraola saw further progress in his team’s cohesion. The Spanish manager fielded a remarkably young central defensive partnership, pairing 19-year-old Ifeanye Ndukwe with 22-year-old Luke Chambers. Despite facing a physical Wrexham forward line, the makeshift duo restricted their opponents to sporadic chances and held firm to preserve a clean sheet.
In midfield, 19-year-old Trey Nyoni delivered a standout performance. Operating in the engine room, Nyoni repeatedly demanded possession under pressure, showing exceptional composure to break lines and drive Liverpool forward.
Speaking after the match, Iraola praised the teenager’s maturity on the ball: “At the end, he is a midfielder who, I always say, you have to ask for the ball sometimes with pressure – and he doesn’t feel this pressure. Even when he has one opponent quite close, he asks for that ball and he’s confident, he doesn’t rush. For me, that is very valuable.”
Tactical Progress and Squad Integration
The Reds created several opportunities to extend their lead. Sixteen-year-old Josh Abe squandered an early opening inside the box, while Harvey Elliott provided creativity and work rate in an advanced role. Although Wrexham threatened intermittently, Liverpool controlled the tempo for large spells, demonstrating the pressing triggers and fluid passing structures Iraola is keen to install.
“I’m happy today because we played a lot of the young players,” Iraola added in his post-match assessment. “Some of them had difficult match-ups, Luke Chambers playing as a centre-back against big bodies, he covered very well and played very well from the back.”
Liverpool will now continue their North American tour, with Iraola expected to gradually reintegrate senior international players ahead of their domestic opener.
