Loris Karius is enjoying a remarkable revival at Schalke after years in the shadows. The German goalkeeper has rebuilt his career in Gelsenkirchen and is now attracting attention with a series of impressive performances in the Bundesliga.
Karius was outstanding as Schalke held Bayern Munich to a 0-0 draw in their first home Bundesliga match since returning to the top flight. The 33-year-old produced several important saves, including a spectacular late stop to deny Harry Kane and preserve a valuable point for his side.
His resurgence has been a long process. After his difficult spell following the 2018 Champions League final with Liverpool, Karius struggled for regular first-team football at Beşiktaş, Union Berlin and Newcastle United. He eventually joined Schalke in January 2025, initially as a backup goalkeeper. However, he soon earned the starting position before an injury ended his first season with the club.
Last season proved to be the turning point. Karius became Schalke’s first-choice goalkeeper, starting 30 of their 34 league matches as the team conceded only 31 goals — the best defensive record in the division — and won promotion back to the Bundesliga. His contract was subsequently extended until 2028.
Now, Karius looks increasingly confident between the posts. His performance against Bayern was more than just a good individual display; it was a reminder of the goalkeeper he once promised to become. Schalke’s promotion has given him another opportunity at the highest level, and he appears determined to make the most of it.
For Karius, the journey from one of football’s most difficult moments to becoming a hero in a major Bundesliga fixture is a powerful comeback story. His recent form suggests that his best years may not be behind him after all.
