The Manchester United Muslim Supporters Club (MUMSC) has called for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family to leave Manchester United, saying it has lost confidence in the club’s ownership following Ratcliffe’s latest comments about immigration and the UK.
Ratcliffe, United’s co-owner and Ineos founder, said in a recent BBC interview that Britain was facing decline because of factors including high taxes and immigration. The comments prompted a strong response from the club’s Muslim supporters’ group, which said it had previously condemned Ratcliffe’s remarks about immigration earlier in the year.
“We find these latest comments deeply disappointing and completely unacceptable,” MUMSC said in a statement.
The group argued that Ratcliffe’s comments were particularly troubling given the diversity of Manchester United’s playing staff, employees and worldwide support base.
“Manchester United would not be Manchester United without them,” MUMSC said, referring to the different nationalities, cultures, ethnicities and religions represented across the club. “That diversity isn’t a weakness of Manchester United. It is part of Manchester United.”
The supporters’ group also linked its criticism to wider concerns about the direction of the club under its current ownership structure.
MUMSC said supporters had initially hoped Ratcliffe’s arrival, after his acquisition of a 27.7% stake in 2024, would bring significant change following the Glazer family’s ownership. The group now cited concerns including ticket prices, the condition of Old Trafford and the team’s performances.
United have also experienced significant organisational changes since Ratcliffe’s arrival, including restructuring and hundreds of job cuts.
Manchester United Muslim supporters criticise ownership
MUMSC said its members had previously hoped for “meaningful change” but now believed their concerns extended beyond the football team.
The group is an official Manchester United supporters’ club, and the club’s own supporters’ pages list the Manchester United Muslims Supporters’ Club among its recognised non-geographical supporters’ groups.
Manchester United also describes itself as an inclusive and diverse club on its official supporters’ platform, while its fan structures include representatives from different supporter communities.
MUMSC concluded its statement by calling for a change in ownership.
“After years of decline, broken promises and repeated failure, Manchester United Muslim Supporters’ Club has lost confidence in the current ownership structure of Manchester United Football Club,” the group said.
“Enough is enough. It is time for change. The Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe must go.”
The statement comes during a difficult period on the pitch for United, who were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Brighton earlier this week.
