Manchester United suffer derby defeat after controversial Haaland goal

Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat to 10-man Manchester City in a controversial Manchester derby at Old Trafford, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal in the second half.

City were reduced to 10 men midway through the first half after Phil Foden was sent off, giving United a numerical advantage for much of the match.

However, United were unable to make their advantage count. Haaland eventually broke the deadlock in the second half to hand City a hard-fought victory.

The goal sparked significant controversy, with Enzo Fernández appearing to attempt to play the ball from an offside position during the build-up. Although the City midfielder did not make contact with the ball, his movement appeared to affect United defender Lisandro Martínez.

The on-field decision was initially to disallow the goal for offside, but VAR intervened and overturned the decision after determining that Haaland himself was in an onside position.

United manager Michael Carrick described the decision as “staggering” after the match.

The result was particularly frustrating for United given that they played against 10 men for a large portion of the game but failed to take advantage.

United entered the derby with four points from their opening three Premier League matches. They began the campaign with a 2-0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull before responding with a 5-2 victory over Ipswich. A late Ainsley Maitland-Niles goal then earned them a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Carrick’s side had also enjoyed a midweek boost with a 4-0 victory over Sabah in the Champions League.

City, meanwhile, maintained their perfect start to the campaign. Pep Guardiola’s side had won their opening four matches across the Premier League and Champions League before the derby, including victories over Crystal Palace and Porto.

Despite playing with 10 men, City held on to claim all three points and extend their strong start to the season.

For United, the defeat represents another setback early in Carrick’s tenure, while the controversial nature of Haaland’s winner is likely to keep the VAR debate surrounding the derby alive.
