Jurrien Timber has temporarily left Arsenal’s pre-season training camp in Spain to continue his rehabilitation from the groin injury that ruled him out of this summer’s World Cup.
The Netherlands international has travelled back to London as part of a planned stage of his recovery programme rather than because of any setback. Timber is expected to return to Spain once that work has been completed and rejoin Mikel Arteta’s squad.
The 24-year-old endured an injury-disrupted end to last season. After missing two months with an ankle problem, he recovered in time to feature in Arsenal’s Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. A subsequent groin issue, however, prevented him from representing the Netherlands at the World Cup.
Timber returns to London during Arsenal training camp
Despite those fitness concerns, Timber remains a key figure in Arteta’s plans after establishing himself as Arsenal’s first-choice right-back during their Premier League title-winning campaign. He made 30 league appearances as the Gunners ended their long wait to lift the trophy.
Since arriving from Ajax in a deal worth an initial £34 million in July 2023, Timber has experienced mixed fortunes with injuries. He missed most of his debut season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury before returning to become one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers last term.
Arsenal are not believed to be concerned by Timber’s latest trip back to London, with the visit understood to have been scheduled as part of his rehabilitation rather than prompted by a fresh problem.
The Gunners continue their preparations for the new campaign in Spain before facing Manchester City in the Community Shield on 16 August. Arteta’s side then begin the defence of their Premier League title against newly promoted Coventry City five days later, with Timber expected to continue working towards full fitness ahead of the new season.
