Thomas Tuchel has made several notable changes to his latest England squad, recalling Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold while leaving Manchester City forward Phil Foden out once again.
Palmer and Alexander-Arnold both missed England’s 2026 World Cup squad but have now been handed an opportunity to return to the international setup. Tuchel said the pair have a point to prove and will need to demonstrate their quality to retain their places.
Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha and Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott have also received their first senior international call-ups for the upcoming Nations League campaign.
Tuchel insisted that selection remains open to players outside the current squad, but stressed that performances, behaviour and commitment to the team will determine who gets another opportunity.
“The door is always open through performance… behaviour and commitment to the team spirit.”
Palmer and Alexander-Arnold get another chance
Tuchel dismissed suggestions that recalling Palmer and Alexander-Arnold meant he regretted leaving them out of the World Cup squad.
The England boss said the priority was to bring their quality back into the group and give them an opportunity to perform.
Alexander-Arnold will return specifically as a right-back, with Tuchel confirming he will not be used in midfield during the upcoming international break.
Palmer, meanwhile, will have to prove that his club form can translate into performances for England.
Mainoo set for playing time
Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is also expected to feature during the upcoming matches.
Tuchel praised Mainoo’s contribution during the World Cup and said the midfielder “didn’t put a foot wrong” in training or within the squad.
The England manager acknowledged that other midfielders were trusted ahead of Mainoo during the tournament but said it was now his responsibility to reward the youngster for his efforts.
Why Gibbs-White missed out
Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White came close to selection but ultimately missed the squad.
Tuchel explained that England already had several players competing for the No.10 role and that selecting too many players in the same position would not benefit the squad.
He acknowledged Gibbs-White’s strong form and his contribution to Forest’s campaign but said selection was only the first step — players must subsequently perform for England to establish themselves.
England’s next challenge
England begin their next Nations League campaign with a major test against Spain, the reigning world champions. They will also face the Czech Republic and Croatia during the competition.
Tuchel said the objective is to challenge for the Nations League title while building on the foundations established during the World Cup.
England reached the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup before losing to Argentina and subsequently claimed the bronze medal. Tuchel said the disappointment remains, but believes the experience can provide a foundation for the next phase of his tenure.
“We feel the gap is closing, we feel we are close, we want to prove a point.”
The return of Palmer and Alexander-Arnold, alongside first senior call-ups for Ngumoha and Scott, gives Tuchel an opportunity to reshape his squad as England begin their post-World Cup campaign.
