Andrea Capone: Former Serie A star found dead in a hotel room at 43

Former Cagliari footballer Andrea Capone, aged 43, was found dead in a two-story suite at the five-star Palazzo Tirso hotel, sparking an investigation into the mysterious circumstances surrounding his demise.

Capone, a midfielder who inherited the prestigious No. 10 shirt from Gianfranco Zola at his boyhood club, had attended a baptism party the previous night and reportedly stayed at the hotel because he couldn’t locate his car keys. He was discovered this morning with head injuries, prompting immediate speculation and concern.

Born in Cagliari in 1981, Capone was a product of the club’s youth academy. His promise was such that after graduating, he was issued the No. 10 shirt that had been retired following Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola’s departure from the Sardinian club. Capone went on to become a regular feature in Cagliari’s Serie A midfield in the 2000s.

Initial investigations suggest that Capone may have accidentally fallen and hit his head. A preliminary external examination by medical examiners indicates that the injuries are consistent with a fall. However, police are still working to reconstruct Capone’s final hours, with plans to review the hotel’s internal camera footage.

The case is currently being handled by the police’s flying squad, with additional support from the mobile squad and forensics team. An autopsy is expected to be conducted to provide more clarity on the cause of death.

Beyond Cagliari, Capone’s career spanned several Italian clubs, including Sora, Treviso, Vicenza, Grosseto, and Salernitana. He also represented Italy at the under-20 level in 2001.

Cagliari Calcio expressed their shock and sadness in a Facebook post: “All of Cagliari Calcio learns with shock and profound sadness the news of Andrea Capone’s passing, who died at just 43 years old. The bond with his land will remain unbreakable for a boy always known for his professionalism, dedication, and passion. Qualities that will remain in the hearts of those who had the fortune to know him, meet him on and off the field. Cagliari Calcio stands with the family in this moment of great sorrow. Rest in peace, Andrea.”
