Tottenham edge Man City to advance to Carabao Cup quarters

Tottenham edge Man City, and  secured their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over Manchester City, setting up a clash with Manchester United in December.

Timo Werner opened the scoring after five minutes with his first goal of the season, followed by Pape Sarr’s spectacular 25-yard strike in the 25th minute to put Spurs in control.

The hosts faced an early setback when defender Micky van de Ven was forced off with a hamstring injury in the 14th minute. City reduced the deficit through Matheus Nunes in first-half stoppage time, creating a compelling second half.

Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega produced several crucial saves to deny Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, and Richarlison. Werner, who later departed with a groin injury, missed a clear opportunity to extend Spurs’ lead.

The visitors also suffered an injury blow when Savinho was stretchered off. City nearly found a late equalizer, but Yves Bissouma’s goal-line block from Nico O’Reilly’s shot preserved Tottenham’s advantage.

The victory keeps Ange Postecoglou’s side on track to end their trophy drought, which stretches back to their League Cup triumph in 2008. Spurs will face Manchester United in their quarter-final tie during the week of December 16.
