Ajax mark 125 Years of Football Legacy with Historic Celebrations

Amsterdam, Netherlands – March 18, 2025, marks a monumental milestone for Dutch football giants AFC Ajax as the club celebrates its 125th anniversary. Founded on March 18, 1900, in the heart of Amsterdam, Ajax has grown from humble beginnings in the lower tiers of Dutch football to becoming one of the most storied clubs in European football history.

The journey began with Ajax donning their iconic red and white striped jerseys for the first time in the 1911 season, a look that has since become synonymous with the club and its city. Their first league title came in 1918, followed by a golden era in the 1930s, during which the club amassed numerous national titles. By the mid-20th century, Ajax had firmly established itself as a dominant force in Dutch football.

The club’s transformation into a European powerhouse began in the 1960s, with the emergence of legendary figures like Johan Cruyff. Under Cruyff’s influence, Ajax achieved unprecedented success, winning back-to-back European Cups in 1971 and 1972, followed by an Intercontinental Cup. The 1970s also saw the club secure two European Super Cups and another European Cup, cementing their place among Europe’s elite.

The 1990s brought further glory under the guidance of manager Louis van Gaal, with Ajax winning the UEFA Champions League in 1995 and a UEFA Super Cup in 1992. Despite a decline in European success in recent years, Ajax remains a dominant force in the Eredivisie, earning their 30th league title in 2011 and reaching the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.

To commemorate their 125th anniversary, Ajax launched a special edition jersey on March 14, 2025, designed by Adidas. The jersey pays homage to the 1911-12 season, when the club first adopted its iconic red and white stripes. The anniversary celebrations also include events in Amsterdam’s Dam Square, which has been designated a safety risk area from 3 p.m. on March 18 to midnight, with increased police presence to ensure a controlled and festive atmosphere.

As Ajax reflects on 125 years of triumphs, challenges, and unforgettable moments, the club’s legacy continues to inspire football fans worldwide. From their historic beginnings to their golden eras and beyond, Ajax’s name remains etched in golden letters in the annals of football history. Here’s to 125 years of Ajax – and many more to come.
