Al Sadd secured their 18th Qatar Stars League (QSL) title, and their second in succession, with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Al Ahli in the final round of the 2024-25 season at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Friday. The win ensured they finished two points clear of rivals Al Duhail, who also won their final match.
Needing a victory to guarantee the championship, Al Sadd delivered a commanding performance. Captain Akram Afif opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 13th minute after a VAR review confirmed he had been fouled by Talal Abdulla Bahzad. Afif coolly converted for his 18th league goal of the season.
Al Ahli threatened briefly, hitting the post through Abdelrahman Mohammed, but Al Sadd effectively sealed the title before halftime. Moustafa Tarek made it 2-0 in the 44th minute, pouncing after Al Ahli goalkeeper Marwan Sherif spilled a long shot from Claudinho. Minutes later, in first-half stoppage time, Paulo Otávio deflected in a cross from Afif to make it 3-0.
The second half saw Rafa Mujica add a fourth in the 67th minute, finishing off another Afif assist, before Claudinho completed the scoring in the 81st minute with a volley following Otávio’s header down. Mujica joined Afif on 18 goals as Al Sadd’s joint-top scorers for the league campaign.
Al Duhail Finish Second Despite Win
Al Duhail knew they needed Al Sadd to slip up, but did their part with a 1-0 victory over already-relegated Al Khor. Kenyan striker Michael Olunga scored the only goal in the 68th minute, but it wasn’t enough as Al Duhail finished second on 50 points, two behind the champions (52 points).
Reactions and Final Standings
“It was a long season. We faced difficulties… but then we performed at a high level,” said Al Sadd coach Felix Sanchez. “We always believed we could win the league title… we deserve to win the title this season.” Star forward Akram Afif added: “Winning the league title is the fruit of a full season of hard work… This season is different and has a special flavour.”
The victory marks Al Sadd’s fourth QSL title in the last five years. Elsewhere on the final day, Al Gharafa finished third (41 points) despite losing 2-1 to Al Shahania (7th, 27 points). Al Ahli finished fourth (35 points).
Al Rayyan beat Qatar SC 2-0 thanks to a Roger Guedes brace to secure fifth place (33 points), while Al Shamal beat Al Wakrah 1-0 to finish sixth (32 points). Umm Salal beat Al Arabi 2-0 and will face Al Markhiya in the relegation play-off after finishing 11th (21 points).
