Arsenal Win Appeal Against Lewis-Skelly Red Card

Arsenal Win Appeal Against Lewis-Skelly Red Card

Arsenal have successfully appealed against the red card shown to midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 18-year-old was dismissed by referee Michael Oliver for a challenge on Matt Doherty, but an FA disciplinary commission has overturned the decision, meaning Lewis-Skelly will not serve a three-match suspension.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was furious with the red card, which would have seen Lewis-Skelly miss crucial upcoming matches against Aston Villa, Newcastle United, and Leicester City. The club wasted no time in lodging an appeal, citing the recent successful appeals of Bruno Fernandes and Christian Nørgaard as precedents.

This is the third time this season that a Premier League red card has been overturned on appeal despite the presence of VAR. In both previous cases, the FA panel reached a split 2-1 decision to overturn the red card.

Oliver Targeted with Abuse

The controversial decision sparked outrage among some Arsenal fans, with referee Michael Oliver and his family subjected to threats and abuse online. Police have launched investigations into the incidents, and the PGMOL released a statement condemning the “abhorrent” abuse.

This is not the first time a Premier League referee has been targeted with abuse. In 2021, Mike Dean took a break from officiating after receiving death threats following a red card decision.

Arsenal will be relieved to have Lewis-Skelly available for their upcoming matches, particularly the crucial Premier League clash against Manchester City on Sunday. The young midfielder’s presence will also be a boost for the Gunners as they look to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.
