Aston Villa continued their impressive Premier League campaign with a 2–1 victory over Manchester United at Villa Park, overturning an early setback to claim all three points and consolidate their place among the league’s top contenders.
Manchester United made a bright start to the second half and broke the deadlock in the 48th minute when Matheus Cunha finished a swift counter-attack, set up by Patrick Dorgu. The goal briefly raised hopes of a vital away win for United, who are chasing a top-four finish.
Villa, however, responded with composure and authority. Morgan Rogers brought the hosts level soon after, finishing confidently following good work from Ollie Watkins. The momentum firmly swung in Villa’s favor, and they completed the turnaround in the 57th minute when captain John McGinn struck decisively, underlining Villa’s control in midfield.
United attempted to change the course of the match with early second-half substitutions, introducing Lisandro Martínez and Bruno Fernandes at halftime, followed later by Manuel Ugarte. Despite enjoying more possession and registering 15 shots, the visitors struggled to make their pressure count.
Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was instrumental in preserving the lead, producing key saves to deny United, who managed six shots on target. Villa’s disciplined defensive display ensured they saw out the match despite having less of the ball.
Statistically, United dominated possession (58%) and contested more duels, but Villa proved more efficient in front of goal. The win marked Villa’s fifth consecutive league victory, lifting them to third place with 36 points from 17 matches. United remain seventh on 26 points, their hopes of climbing the table taking another blow.
The result highlighted Unai Emery’s tactical astuteness, as Villa continued their surge toward the top of the Premier League standings.
