Atlético Madrid’s La Liga title challenge suffered another setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Villarreal. This result comes just a week after a shock defeat to Leganes, leaving Atlético trailing Real Madrid by one point ahead of their rivals’ match against Valladolid.
Villarreal took the lead in the 25th minute through a penalty from Gerard Moreno, their all-time leading scorer. Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Atlético struggled to find an equalizer until the second half.
Diego Simeone’s half-time substitutions proved decisive, with Samu Lino scoring the equalizing goal shortly after coming on. Despite further pressure, Atlético were unable to find a winner, with Griezmann’s late header going narrowly wide.
This draw is a blow to Atlético’s title aspirations, leaving them with ground to make up on Real Madrid. They will need to rediscover their winning form quickly if they are to challenge for the La Liga crown.
