Dortmund’s Away Woes Continue with Defeat at Augsburg

Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga struggles persisted as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Augsburg, further denting their title aspirations just days after their Champions League setback against Real Madrid.

The visitors made a promising start when Donyell Malen opened the scoring, finishing clinically after combining with in-form striker Serhou Guirassy, who has now been involved in 10 goals across nine appearances this season.

However, Dortmund’s recurring issues with playing out from the back surfaced again under Nuri Sahin’s management. Augsburg capitalized on this vulnerability when Alexis Claude-Maurice seized upon a loose ball to level the scores with a precise long-range strike past Gregor Kobel.

Marcel Sabitzer nearly restored Dortmund’s advantage before the interval, but Augsburg goalkeeper Nediljko Labrovic produced a fine save to deny his effort from distance.

The hosts took the lead early in the second half through Claude-Maurice’s second goal, the midfielder curling home after Emre Can’s poor clearance. Former Dortmund player Marius Wolf missed an opportunity to extend Augsburg’s lead, while Jamie Gittens came close to equalizing for the visitors.

Dortmund’s frustrating afternoon was compounded when 18-year-old debutant Almugera Kabar received a second yellow card in stoppage time.

The result sees Dortmund, still winless away from home in the Bundesliga this season, drop to eighth place, seven points behind leaders RB Leipzig. Augsburg’s first victory over BVB in four years lifted them to 11th position.
