Bayern Munich have reportedly withdrawn their contract extension offer to Joshua Kimmich, increasing the likelihood of the German international’s departure from the club this summer. The decision, reported by Christian Falk, stems from Bayern’s dissatisfaction with Kimmich’s delay in signing the proposed new deal.
Kimmich, 30, is in the final year of his current contract. While the club had been expected to secure his long-term future, the reported withdrawal of the offer suggests a breakdown in negotiations. The new offer reportedly contained a slight salary reduction, a potential factor in Kimmich’s hesitation.
Having joined Bayern from RB Leipzig in 2015, Kimmich has developed into one of Europe’s most versatile and respected players, capable of excelling in both midfield and right-back positions. He has been a key figure in Bayern’s numerous successes and is considered a leader within the squad.
The news has immediately sparked transfer speculation, with several top European clubs linked with a potential move for the player. Barcelona, managed by Kimmich’s former Bayern coach Hansi Flick, are reportedly interested. Flick and Kimmich enjoyed a highly successful period together at Bayern, winning a sextuple of trophies. Barcelona could utilize Kimmich at right-back, a position currently filled by converted center-back Jules Kounde, or as a replacement for Frenkie De Jong in midfield.
Liverpool are also reportedly monitoring the situation. With rumors circulating about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential move to Real Madrid, Kimmich is viewed as an ideal replacement, offering experience and quality while allowing youngster Conor Bradley to continue his development.
Real Madrid themselves are considered another potential destination, although their primary focus reportedly remains on securing Alexander-Arnold’s signature.
Kimmich’s impending free agency makes him a highly attractive prospect for numerous clubs. His decision in the coming months will be a major storyline of the summer transfer window. With Bayern seemingly unwilling to improve their offer, Kimmich’s next move will have significant implications for the European football landscape.
