Bayern’s Alphonso Davies Out for Season with ACL Tear

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich have been dealt a significant double injury blow, with defender Alphonso Davies ruled out for the remainder of the season due to an ACL tear and Dayot Upamecano sidelined for several weeks with a knee injury. The club confirmed the news on Wednesday, March 26th.

Davies, 24, suffered the ACL tear in his right knee while playing for Canada against the United States in the CONCACAF Nations League third-place playoff on Sunday. The left-back was forced off in the 12th minute and now faces months of recovery.

In addition to Davies’ long-term absence, Bayern confirmed that French international defender Dayot Upamecano, 26, has been diagnosed with loose joints in his left knee and will be unavailable for several weeks.

Eberl added: “Phonzy [Davies] will get all the support he needs on his way back. We will also follow Upa closely in the coming weeks and assume that he will be available again soon. Our squad is strong and will compensate for these absences.”

The injuries come at a crucial time for Vincent Kompany’s side. Bayern currently hold a six-point lead over second-placed Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and face St Pauli on Saturday. They are also preparing for a Champions League quarter-final first leg against Serie A leaders Inter Milan on April 8th. The loss of two key defenders presents a significant challenge as Bayern pursue success on multiple fronts.
