Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich will contest the first German trophy of the 2026-27 season when they meet in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday evening.
Bayern enter the season as Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal holders after completing the domestic double last term, while Dortmund finished second in the Bundesliga. The Supercup is therefore being staged between the champions and runners-up, with Dortmund earning home advantage.
Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich – Match preview
Dortmund improved significantly last season, collecting 73 points and finishing second after a campaign in which they conceded 17 fewer goals and earned 16 more points than in 2024-25. Niko Kovac’s side were particularly strong at Signal Iduna Park, winning 13 of their 17 Bundesliga home matches. Bayern were one of the few teams to leave Dortmund with three points, however, securing a 3-2 victory there in February.
The hosts have had a mixed pre-season, winning three, drawing one and losing two of their six friendlies. Their preparations improved towards the end, with a 3-2 victory over Arsenal followed by a 2-2 draw against Roma after initially falling two goals behind. The gradual return of their World Cup players has also strengthened Kovac’s options.
Bayern were even more impressive last season, winning the Bundesliga while also claiming the DFB-Pokal. They scored 122 league goals, setting a new record for a single Bundesliga campaign, and have retained the core of the squad that delivered the domestic double. Vincent Kompany’s side have also enjoyed an excellent pre-season, winning five of their six friendlies.
The visitors have won both Der Klassiker meetings from last season, although neither victory was particularly comfortable. Bayern’s 3-2 success at Signal Iduna Park followed a 2-1 home victory in October. They have also lost only once in their last eight visits to Dortmund, winning seven of those matches.
This will be the 10th official Supercup meeting between the clubs. Bayern have won five of the previous nine, while Dortmund have prevailed four times. The most recent meeting in the competition came in 2021, when Bayern won 3-1 in Dortmund.
Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich – Team News
Dortmund remain without Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can, with both ruled out through injury. Carney Chukwuemeka has returned to team training after muscular problems and could be an option, while Maximilian Beier has recovered from a knee knock and is available. Waldemar Anton has also returned to full training and is fit to play.
Kovac is expected to use a back three, with Joane Gadou, Waldemar Anton and Ramy Bensebaini among the leading candidates to start. New signings Joey Veerman and Giannis Konstantelias have only just joined the squad, so both are more likely to feature from the bench. Konstantinos Karetsas, who has already played in pre-season, is in contention to start.
Bayern will be without Jamal Musiala, who has been left out after suffering two recent collapses during pre-season. The club has said he is receiving treatment for a neurological dysfunction and will not be rushed back. Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl are also unavailable.
Harry Kane, Dayot Upamecano and Michael Olise joined Bayern’s preparations later than most of the squad after their World Cup commitments. Kane is expected to feature, although his limited preparation means his minutes could be managed. Bayern’s new arrivals Nathaniel Brown and Ismaël Saibari are also in contention.
Predicted Lineups
Borussia Dortmund: Gregor Kobel; Joane Gadou, Waldemar Anton, Ramy Bensebaini; Julian Ryerson, Jobe Bellingham, Felix Nmecha, Daniel Svensson; Konstantinos Karetsas, Samuele Inácio; Serhou Guirassy.
Bayern Munich: Manuel Neuer; Sacha Boey, Jonathan Tah, Min-jae Kim, Nathaniel Brown; Joshua Kimmich, Tom Bischof, Aleksandar Pavlovic; Ismaël Saibari, Arijon Ibrahimović, Luis Díaz.
The main selection uncertainty is in attack for Bayern, where Kane could replace Ibrahimović if Kompany decides his striker is ready for a starting role. Dortmund have greater availability after the return of Anton and Beier, although the latter is not expected to displace Guirassy from the starting XI.

What we say: Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Bayern Munich
Dortmund have enough going for them to make this a genuinely competitive Supercup, particularly with home advantage and a strong record at Signal Iduna Park. They won 13 of their 17 Bundesliga home matches last season and have strengthened their options ahead of the new campaign.
Bayern remain the stronger side on paper, but their attack is weakened by the absence of Jamal Musiala, while Harry Kane has indicated that he may only be ready for around 45 minutes. That could leave Dortmund with an opportunity to establish an early advantage.
Bayern’s quality should ensure a close contest, but Dortmund can take advantage of their opponents’ reduced attacking options and home support to claim the first trophy of the German season.
Our prediction: Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Bayern Munich.
