Madrid Extend Winning Run and Close on Barcelona
Real Madrid continued their strong momentum in La Liga with a controlled 2–0 away victory over Valencia on Matchday 23, cutting the gap to leaders Barcelona to just one point. The result marked Madrid’s seventh consecutive league win of 2026.
Played at a sold-out Mestalla Stadium on Sunday, the contest was decided by second-half goals from Álvaro Carreras and Kylian Mbappé after a subdued opening period.
First Half Lacks Quality
Chances were limited before the break, with both teams cancelling each other out in midfield. Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski denied Gonzalo García from close range, while Thibaut Courtois was called into action to save an effort from André Almeida. Beyond those moments, attacking fluency was scarce.
Carreras Breaks the Deadlock
Real Madrid emerged with greater purpose after halftime and took the lead in the 65th minute. Álvaro Carreras drove forward from left-back, beat two defenders with a sharp dribble and finished low at the near post to put the visitors ahead.
Valencia responded quickly and came agonisingly close to equalising when Lucas Beltrán struck the post, but the hosts failed to capitalise on their best spell.
Mbappé Seals It Late
As Valencia committed men forward in search of a leveller, Madrid found space on the counter. In stoppage time (90+1’), substitute Brahim Díaz delivered a precise cross that Mbappé finished unmarked at the far post, sealing the win and scoring his 23rd La Liga goal of the season.
Tactical Notes
Head coach Álvaro Arbeloa rotated his squad, coping without suspended Vinícius Júnior and injured Rodrygo. Mbappé partnered García in attack, while Madrid’s reshaped defence remained composed, limiting Valencia to few clear chances late on.
