Manchester City claimed bragging rights in Manchester with a commanding 3-0 victory over rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium. Phil Foden opened the scoring in the first half, before Erling Haaland struck twice after the break to seal a comfortable win for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Foden and Haaland Lead the Way
Phil Foden set the tone early, heading City in front after just 18 minutes. The England international dedicated his goal to late boxer Ricky Hatton, saying he had “extra motivation” going into the game. Foden also addressed recent criticism of his performances, insisting he wanted to “come back to his best level.”
Haaland then took over after the interval. The Norwegian doubled City’s advantage in the 53rd minute following fine work from Jeremy Doku, before adding his second in the 68th minute after capitalising on a United mistake. Haaland, who almost completed a hat-trick, earned a standing ovation from the home crowd when he was substituted late on.
United Struggle Again
For Manchester United, it was another disappointing afternoon. Captain Bruno Fernandes admitted his side conceded “three goals that could have been avoided” and stressed the need to improve in both attack and defence. Despite spells of possession, United rarely threatened Gianluigi Donnarumma in City’s goal and squandered several chances.
Manager Ruben Amorim, who has been under pressure following a poor start to the season, endured a tough evening as his side slipped to 14th place in the table with only four points.
Guardiola’s Milestone and City’s Position
The win marked another milestone for Pep Guardiola, with City moving up to eighth in the Premier League standings. Liverpool continue to lead the table after their dramatic late win at Burnley earlier in the weekend.
The Etihad crowd celebrated in style, with fans performing the Poznan as City tightened their grip on the derby. Haaland summed up the mood afterwards, saying: “We needed this win, and you could feel it from the fans. I’m relieved and so happy we did this together.”
