Diaz scores as Bayern beat Stuttgart to win German Supercup

Goals from Harry Kane and debutant Luis Diaz fired Bayern Munich to a 2-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart on Saturday, securing the German Supercup in the traditional curtain-raiser to the new season.

Kane, last season’s Bundesliga top scorer, gave the league champions an 18th-minute lead, capitalising on a defensive error to score the opener. Diaz, a new signing for the Bavarians, then headed in what proved to be the winning goal late in the second half.

While Bayern’s attack secured the trophy, it was veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer who earned Man of the Match honours with a series of crucial saves. The 39-year-old made a vital point-blank stop to deny Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade in the first half and produced an excellent reflex save late in the game to preserve his side’s lead.

“We did it well. We won all the matches in pre-season and we want to carry this into the Bundesliga season next week,” Neuer said after the match. “It’s nice to be man of the match but it’s always about the team.”

After Kane’s opener, it was Diaz who sealed the result for the visitors, heading in a Serge Gnabry cross in the 77th minute with his first attempt on goal.

German Cup winners Stuttgart scored a consolation goal deep in stoppage time through a close-range header from Jamie Leweling, but it was too late to affect the outcome. The victory gives Bayern Munich momentum as they prepare to begin their Bundesliga campaign next week.
