Defending champions England produced their most impressive performance of the European Under-21 Championship, defeating Spain 3-1 on Saturday to book their place in the semi-finals.
Early goals from James McAtee and Harvey Elliott, and a late penalty from Elliot Anderson, secured a commanding victory for Lee Carsley’s side in a repeat of the 2023 final. The Young Lions will now face the Netherlands in Bratislava on Wednesday for a place in the final.
England started the match with high intensity. After an early scare when a third-minute penalty awarded to Spain for a handball by Charlie Cresswell was overturned by referee Simone Sozza following a VAR review, the holders took control.
McAtee swept home the opening goal from a corner, and Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott quickly made it 2-0 inside the first 15 minutes, pouncing on a rebound after Spanish goalkeeper Alejandro Iturbe spilled a shot from Jarell Quansah.
Spain were handed a lifeline six minutes before halftime when Alex Scott lost possession and Quansah fouled Alberto Moleiro in the penalty area. Javi Guerra successfully converted the spot-kick to reduce the deficit.
In the second half, Spain pressed for an equaliser, but a crucial double save from England goalkeeper James Beadle denied Guerra his second goal. The Young Lions sealed their victory in stoppage time when Newcastle United’s Elliot Anderson scored from the penalty spot after Jonathan Rowe was felled by Iturbe.
The match concluded with a heated confrontation between both sets of players and benches at the final whistle, resulting in a red card for unused Spanish substitute Rafa Marin.
After an unconvincing group stage, the victory was a statement of intent from England, who displayed both quality and resilience. Manchester City’s James McAtee, who opted to play in this tournament instead of the Club World Cup, was a standout performer, while defender Charlie Cresswell was exceptional at the back.
England’s disciplined defensive effort was key to their success, with the team making numerous blocks and clearances to thwart Spanish attacks. They now advance to the semi-finals as clear contenders to defend their European crown.
