France edge Denmark 3-2 to reach U21 Euros semifinals

A stunning late comeback saw France score twice in the final six minutes to defeat Denmark 3-2 in the quarter-finals of the European Under-21 Championship on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur forward Mathys Tel curled in the winning goal in the 85th minute, just moments after Quentin Merlin had drilled home an equaliser, to cap a dramatic turnaround and send the Danes crashing out of the tournament.

Denmark had twice taken the lead and appeared on course for the semi-finals. Clement Bischoff opened the scoring for the Danes, only for France’s Djaoui Cisse to level with an excellent solo effort before halftime.

Bischoff was instrumental again early in the second half, flicking on a long throw for Oliver Sorensen to restore Denmark’s lead.

However, France mounted a fierce late rally. Merlin’s powerful strike from outside the box made it 2-2 in the 84th minute, before Tel sealed the remarkable comeback win just a minute later with a composed, curling finish.

France will now face Germany in the semi-finals on Wednesday, June 25, after the Germans edged out Italy in a 3-2 extra-time thriller. The other semi-final will see defending champions England take on the Netherlands on the same night.
