Fulham vs Aston Villa – Match Preview and Team News

Fulham host Aston Villa at Craven Cottage in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off with contrasting objectives shaping the encounter.

Villa cling to fourth place and the final Champions League spot, while the hosts search for a meaningful victory to salvage their European ambitions. Kick-off is at 12:30 PM BST on April 26, with Villa arriving buoyed by Tammy Abraham’s stoppage-time winner in their 4-3 thriller against Sunderland.

Unai Emery’s side sit fourth on 58 points, level with Manchester United and holding an eight-point cushion over sixth-placed Brighton. Fulham occupy 12th on 45 points, safe but frustrated after consecutive goalless draws with Brentford and Nottingham Forest.

Can Fulham Rediscover Their Scoring Touch?

Goals have become a precious commodity for Marco Silva’s Fulham. They have failed to score in four of their last five Premier League matches – as many blanks as in their previous 25 combined. The statistics make grim reading: 71 shots across these five games have yielded just three goals, a conversion rate of 4.2%.

Their struggles are particularly acute in the opening period. Since the turn of the year, only relegated Wolves have matched Fulham’s meagre tally of four first-half goals. Between August and December, only seven teams scored more before the interval than the Cottagers’ 11.

Silva’s side most recently played out an uneventful stalemate with West London rivals Brentford, where Bernd Leno’s outstanding 90th-minute save secured a point. While Fulham’s European dreams remain mathematically alive – they sit just five points behind sixth place – their sluggish form makes qualification increasingly improbable.

However, Villa’s defensive fragility offers hope. Emery’s backline has conceded at least three goals in three of their last five league matches – matching their total from the previous 38 games combined. They averaged under a goal per game in those 38 fixtures (0.95) compared to over two per game in the last five (2.2).

The timing could prove fortuitous for Fulham. With Champions League qualification virtually secured and Europa League semi-finals against Nottingham Forest looming, Villa may prioritize rotation. Alex Iwobi, Josh King and Samuel Chukwueze – Fulham’s most lively performers during this barren spell – might exploit the spaces behind a potentially reshuffled defence.

Villa’s Away Day Blues

Emery’s men have won just one of their last seven away Premier League fixtures (D3 L3), remaining winless in four on the road. They haven’t endured a longer away winless streak since November/December 2024, when five consecutive defeats blighted their campaign.

Recent trips have yielded disappointing returns: draws at Bournemouth and Forest sandwiched between defeats at Wolves and Manchester United. The defensive issues evident in the Sunderland victory – where they squandered a 3-1 lead before Abraham’s late heroics – will concern Emery ahead of Craven Cottage.

Despite this, Villa can draw confidence from their dominance over Fulham. They have won the last six Premier League encounters since a 3-0 defeat in October 2022. Only against Coventry (seven between 1995-98) have they enjoyed a longer winning sequence in the competition. Emery himself boasts a perfect record against the Cottagers, winning all eight Premier League meetings.

Team News

Fulham will be without Kevin (foot) and Kenny Tete (ankle), while Alex Iwobi faces a late fitness test on a thigh problem sustained against Brentford. Silva may freshen his midfield, with Sander Berge and Harrison Reed pushing to start ahead of Sasa Lukic and Tom Cairney.

January signing Oscar Bobb and Samuel Chukwueze are both contenders for the left flank, while Raul Jimenez could replace Rodrigo Muniz up front. The Brazilian hasn’t scored since August, prompting potential change.

Villa remain without Boubacar Kamara (knee) and January signing Alysson (fitness issue). Should Morgan Rogers move centrally, Jadon Sancho or Emiliano Buendia could start on the left. Lucas Digne is pushing to replace Ian Maatsen at left-back.

Ollie Watkins is expected to lead the line again. The England international has six goals in nine appearances against Fulham – only Brighton (nine) and Arsenal (seven) have suffered more at his hands.

Predicted Lineups

Fulham: Leno; Castagne, Andersen, Bassey, Sessegnon; Berge, Lukic; Wilson, Smith Rowe, Bobb; Jimenez

Aston Villa: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Maatsen; Onana, Tielemans; McGinn, Rogers, Sancho; Watkins

Head-to-Head

Fulham’s recent record against Villa makes for difficult reading. Having lost just two of their first 13 Premier League home games against the Midlanders (W5 D6), they have now lost three of the last four at Craven Cottage (W1). Villa’s last visit ended 3-1 in September 2025.

Seven of Fulham’s last eight Premier League victories have come against bottom-half opposition. They have won just one of their last nine against top-half teams (D2 L6), highlighting the challenge ahead.

Leno will make his 145th consecutive Premier League start for Fulham, the longest ongoing run in the division. Only five players in history have had longer runs: Brad Friedel (310), Tim Howard (210), Pepe Reina (183), David James (twice, 166 and 158), and Kasper Schmeichel (149).

Form Guide

Fulham (L-D-W-L-D):

Two goalless draws in three suggest a side lacking motivation, though the 3-1 home victory over Burnley demonstrated their capability when firing. With European qualification slipping away, finding urgency will be crucial.

Aston Villa (L-L-W-D-W):

Abraham’s late winner against Sunderland likely secured Champions League football, providing breathing room despite defensive concerns. Their eight-point cushion over sixth and a game in hand offer security ahead of European commitments.

Prediction

Villa’s superior quality and head-to-head dominance make them favourites, but their defensive vulnerability and potential rotation could provide openings. Fulham desperately need goals but have struggled against top-half opposition all season.

Expect Emery to field a strong side to maintain momentum before European duties. Watkins’ excellent record against Fulham should prove decisive, though the Cottagers may finally break their drought against Villa’s fragile backline.
