Gabriel Magalhães headed in a dramatic 96th-minute winner as Arsenal came from behind to secure a vital 2-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle United in a contentious and thrilling encounter at St James’ Park on Sunday.
The Brazilian defender connected with a Martin Ødegaard corner deep into stoppage time to snatch all three points, moving Mikel Arteta’s side to within two points of league leaders Liverpool. The result left Newcastle stunned after they had held the lead until the 83rd minute.
Arsenal substitute Mikel Merino had hauled the visitors level with just seven minutes of normal time remaining, cancelling out a powerful first-half header from Newcastle’s record signing, Nick Woltemade.
The match was filled with controversy, most notably a VAR intervention in the first half that overturned an Arsenal penalty. Striker Viktor Gyökeres went down under a challenge from Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope, with referee Jarred Gillett immediately pointing to the spot. However, after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, Gillett reversed his decision, announcing to the stadium that Pope had played the ball and no foul had been committed.
Despite the setback, Newcastle seized the initiative. The towering Woltemade rose above Gabriel to meet a precise inswinging cross from Sandro Tonali, powering a header past David Raya to give the home side the lead.
For much of the match, it appeared Arsenal’s recent winless streak at St James’ Park, which stood at three games in all competitions, was set to continue. Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Nick Pope, was in inspired form, producing a series of crucial saves to deny Eberechi Eze, Jurrien Timber, and Bukayo Saka. The Gunners were also left frustrated when a first-half strike from Leandro Trossard cannoned back off the crossbar.
However, echoing their recent penchant for late goals in the Champions League and against Manchester City, Arsenal mounted a fierce late rally. The comeback began when Merino, a former Newcastle player, glanced a header past Pope from a corner to level the score.
Not content with a point, Arsenal pressed for a winner and were rewarded in the game’s final moments. From another corner, Gabriel rose highest at the near post to direct a firm header into the net, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling supporters and on the Arsenal bench.
The defeat will be a bitter blow for Newcastle, who looked set to claim a significant victory. Their performance was hampered by a second-half injury to defender Tino Livramento, who was carried off on a stretcher after landing awkwardly.
Newcastle will travel to face Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League on Wednesday before hosting Nottingham Forest in the league on October 5. Arsenal’s European fixture is at home against Olympiakos on Wednesday, followed by a Premier League clash with West Ham at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
