Gakpo and Malen Fire Netherlands into Euro 2024 Quarterfinals

The Netherlands rediscovered their attacking verve to defeat a spirited Romania 3-0 and advance to the Euro 2024 quarterfinals for the first time in 16 years. Cody Gakpo, with his third goal of the tournament, and substitute Donyell Malen, with a late brace, secured a convincing victory for the Dutch.

Gakpo opened the scoring midway through the first half, cutting inside from the left before unleashing a clinical strike into the bottom corner. Despite early pressure from a lively Romanian side, spurred on by their passionate fans, the Dutch seized control of the game after Gakpo’s breakthrough.

Although the Netherlands missed several opportunities to extend their lead, Malen ensured victory with two late goals. His first, a close-range finish from Gakpo’s ball, and his second, a composed solo effort after a surging run from midfield, sealed a dominant performance from the Dutch.

While Romania’s early pressing troubled the Netherlands, their momentum waned after Gakpo’s goal. Despite a valiant effort and enthusiastic support from their fans, they could not find a way back into the match.

The Netherlands, who initially struggled to find their rhythm, eventually found their stride, attacking with pace and precision. While missed chances remain a minor concern, their return to a high-tempo style of play will please their supporters.

Romania’s tournament run comes to an end, but their fans can be proud of their team’s achievements. Their passionate support and the team’s spirited performance, especially in the early stages, marked their first knockout stage appearance in 24 years.

The Netherlands, now firing on all cylinders, eagerly await their quarterfinal opponent, either Turkey or a familiar foe from their group stage, Austria.
