Germany and Bayern Legend Thomas Müller Joins MLS

The Vancouver Whitecaps have completed a landmark transfer, signing German football legend Thomas Müller on a season-long deal, the Major League Soccer (MLS) club announced on Wednesday.

Müller, who will turn 36 next month, joins the Whitecaps after a historic 25-year career with Bayern Munich. The forward has signed a contract for the remainder of the 2025 MLS season, with the club holding an option to retain him for 2026 as a Designated Player, a status allowing for salaries that exceed the league’s cap.

“I’m looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship,” Müller said in a club statement. “I’ve heard great things about the city, but first and foremost I’m coming to win.”

The move marks one of the most significant signings in the history of the Whitecaps and MLS. Müller arrives with a resume that includes 13 Bundesliga titles, two UEFA Champions League trophies, and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

“This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership—a transformative moment for our club and our city,” said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps CEO and sporting director. “We are proud to welcome Thomas to Vancouver.”

A one-club man until now, Müller made 756 senior appearances for Bayern Munich, scoring 250 goals and providing 276 assists. For the German national team, he scored 45 goals in 131 appearances and was a pivotal member of the squad that lifted the World Cup in Brazil.

Müller is scheduled to arrive in Vancouver on August 13. The Whitecaps currently sit second in the Western Conference standings and are next in action on Sunday with a visit to the San Jose Earthquakes.
