The margin for error has disappeared. After three weeks of twists and surprises in the group stage, the FIFA World Cup 2026 enters the knockout rounds, where every mistake can prove fatal.
Germany and Paraguay meet at Boston Stadium on Monday with a place in the Round of 16 at stake. Julian Nagelsmann’s side progressed as Group E winners despite stumbling in their final group match, while Paraguay squeezed into the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams after an impressive display of resilience.
History may favour Germany, but Paraguay have built a reputation for frustrating football’s biggest nations when the stakes are highest.
Match Preview
Germany’s group-stage campaign ended with mixed emotions.
For two matches, Die Mannschaft looked like one of the most complete teams in the competition. A ruthless 7-1 demolition of Curaçao was followed by an impressive victory over Ivory Coast as Nagelsmann’s side scored nine goals in their opening two fixtures and booked qualification with a game to spare.
That momentum, however, came to an abrupt halt against Ecuador.
Already assured of a place in the knockout rounds, Germany lacked their usual sharpness and were punished in a 2-1 defeat that served as a timely reminder that the margins become much finer from this point onwards. While the result had little impact on their progression, it exposed defensive lapses that Nagelsmann will be eager to eliminate before the tournament enters its decisive phase.
The four-time world champions have endured disappointing World Cup campaigns in recent years, suffering group-stage exits in both 2018 and 2022. This squad appears far more balanced, but another early elimination would quickly undo the progress made under Nagelsmann.
Paraguay arrive with considerably less pressure.
Few expected Gustavo Alfaro’s side to survive a difficult Group D, yet four points proved enough to secure a place among the tournament’s best third-placed teams. A disciplined victory over Turkey and a hard-fought draw against Australia highlighted the defensive organisation that has become the hallmark of Alfaro’s teams.
Goals have not come easily, but Paraguay rarely make life comfortable for their opponents. Miguel Almirón provides pace on the counterattack, while Julio Enciso remains capable of producing moments of individual brilliance that can change knockout matches.
Germany are expected to dominate possession, but Paraguay are unlikely to panic. Alfaro’s side will happily defend deep, limit space between the lines and wait for opportunities to strike in transition.
The two nations know each other well on the World Cup stage. Germany edged Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16 back in 2002, and another tense encounter would not come as a surprise.
Team News
Germany continue to be without Nico Schlotterbeck, whose tournament ended after suffering a serious ankle injury earlier in the group stage. Antonio Rüdiger is expected to continue alongside Jonathan Tah in central defence, while Nathaniel Brown could return after recovering from a muscular issue.
Nagelsmann is unlikely to make significant changes in attack, with Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané expected to support Kai Havertz in the front line.
Paraguay have been dealt a blow with Diego Gómez suspended after picking up his second yellow card of the tournament. Miguel Almirón returns from suspension and should slot straight back into the starting lineup, while Omar Alderete and Ramón Sosa will both be assessed ahead of kick-off after recent injury concerns.
Form Guide
Germany: L-W-W-W-W-W
Germany remain one of the tournament’s highest-scoring teams despite the defeat to Ecuador, having found the net 11 times in four World Cup matches.
Paraguay: D-W-L-W-L-W
Paraguay have shown impressive resilience throughout the tournament, collecting important results when needed and earning their place in the knockout rounds through disciplined performances.
Predicted Lineups
Germany: Neuer; Kimmich, Rüdiger, Tah, Brown; Pavlović, Nmecha; Sané, Musiala, Wirtz; Havertz.
Paraguay: Gill; Cáceres, Alderete, Velázquez, Alonso; Almirón, Galarza, Cubas, Mauricio; Enciso, Ávalos.
Prediction
Paraguay possess the defensive discipline to make life uncomfortable for Germany, and this is unlikely to become the open contest many expect.
The South Americans will sit compact, slow the tempo and attempt to frustrate Germany for long spells. But over ninety minutes, Nagelsmann’s side simply have too much quality in the final third.
The movement of Musiala and Wirtz between the lines should eventually create the openings Germany need, although Paraguay have enough organisation to keep the score close.
