Spain midfielder Gavi says he does not believe Leandro Paredes should be suspended for his role in the heated confrontation that followed Spain’s World Cup final victory over Argentina.
FIFA has opened an investigation into the post-match scenes that erupted after Spain secured a 1-0 extra-time win in New Jersey, appointing a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the incidents. Players and staff found to have breached FIFA’s disciplinary code could face suspensions, while the Argentine Football Association could also be sanctioned.
Paredes was at the centre of the altercation after appearing to grab Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat before clashing with Gavi. The Barcelona midfielder attempted to intervene but was pushed to the ground by Argentina substitute Thiago Almada before Paredes also shoved him during the melee.
Despite being directly involved in the confrontation, Gavi has urged FIFA not to impose further punishment on the Argentina midfielder.
“I don’t think [Paredes] should be suspended,” Gavi told El Partidazo de COPE.
“I understand it’s not a good image for children, but I think there’s also that side to football, which is a bit more physical, more aggressive.
“The most logical thing would have been to send him off during the match, and that’s it. In the end, I think it’s all football, and it has to be that way.”
Paredes was shown a red card after the final whistle for his involvement in the confrontation, while Argentina team-mate Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were also reported to have taken part in the disorder. FIFA has yet to announce whether any further disciplinary action will follow its investigation.
The incident overshadowed the conclusion of the tournament, which saw Spain lift the World Cup for the second time after their 2010 triumph. Ferran Torres scored the only goal in extra time to secure a 1-0 victory, while Rodri’s side completed the competition having conceded just one goal in eight matches.
