Hosts Germany advanced to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 with a convincing victory over Denmark in a match that was briefly interrupted by a spectacular storm. Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz scored the goals that secured the hosts’ place in the last eight.
The game at Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion was suspended for around 20 minutes towards the end of the first half due to lightning, hail, and heavy rain. However, the match was also notable for several key VAR decisions that impacted the outcome.
Germany had an early header by Nico Schlotterbeck ruled out by VAR, while Denmark were denied an equalizer in the second half when Joachim Andersen’s strike was disallowed due to teammate Thomas Delaney being marginally offside. Moments later, Germany were awarded a penalty after referee Michael Oliver consulted the pitchside monitor and judged Andersen to have handled the ball in the area. Havertz calmly converted the spot-kick to give the hosts the lead.
Germany doubled their advantage just over 20 minutes later when Musiala raced through on the left and slotted the ball into the far corner. The home fans were in full voice, urging their team on for more goals, but none were forthcoming. Nevertheless, the passionate German supporters celebrated their side’s convincing win at the final whistle.
Germany, who have scored a tournament-high 10 goals, will face the winner of the match between Spain and surprise package Georgia in the quarter-finals on Friday, July 5.
This memorable victory showcased Germany’s potential to lift the European Championship trophy on home soil. The hosts produced a display that, at times, demonstrated why they are becoming strong contenders. Despite some defensive concerns, Germany’s attacking prowess, led by the exciting trio of Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and Havertz, proved decisive.
The epic storm that caused the delay in play and the rollercoaster of emotions brought about by the VAR decisions will not be soon forgotten. Germany, however, will be focused on their upcoming quarter-final clash as they continue their quest for Euro 2024 glory.
