Arsenal extended their unbeaten home record with a 1-0 victory over a determined Ipswich Town side, moving them up to second in the Premier League table. Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 23rd minute, tapping in from close range after a Leandro Trossard cross.
Despite dominating possession, particularly in the first half, where they enjoyed 83.5% of the ball, Arsenal found it difficult to break down a stubborn Ipswich defense. Kieran McKenna’s side, who sit second from bottom in the league, adopted a defensive approach, rarely venturing out of their own half.
While Arsenal created several opportunities, they struggled to convert their dominance into clear-cut chances. Declan Rice fired over from the edge of the box, and Gabriel Jesus saw a goal ruled out for offside after squeezing the ball past Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.
Ipswich showed more attacking intent in the second half, but Liam Delap was unable to make a significant impact against Arsenal’s formidable center-back pairing of William Saliba and Gabriel. Arsenal had chances to extend their lead, but Gabriel headed wide from close rang,e and Havertz failed to connect cleanly with a Trossard header.
The victory moves Arsenal to within six points of leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. However, Mikel Arteta will be pleased with his side’s resilience and ability to grind out a result, especially in the absence of key winger Bukayo Saka, who is sidelined with a long-term hamstring injury.
Arteta opted for Gabriel Martinelli to fill the void left by Saka, and while the Brazilian was involved in the build-up to the winning goal, Arsenal’s attack lacked its usual fluency. With several key players out injured, Arteta will be hoping his squad can maintain their strong home form as they continue their push for the title.
