Antonio Conte is officially appointed as the new head coach of Internazionale, replacing Luciano Spaletti, who was officially dismissed yesterday.
Conte returns from his 10 months exile after being sacked by Chelsea to reunite with former Juventus chief executive Beppe Marotta. The pair won three consecutive Serie A titles with the Old Lady between 2011 and 2014 before Conte left to manage Italian national team and then Chelsea, where he won the Premier League title in his first season and ended his second with the FA Cup.
This will mark the end of a bitter legal battle Conte led against Chelsea’s arbitrary termination of his contract as the newly crowned Europa league champions will pay off 9m compensation to clear the path of both parties.
“A new chapter in my life is beginning, I’m really excited,” Conte said in a statement on Inter’s website. “I have chosen Inter because of its history. I was struck by the club’s transparency and the desire to bring Inter back to where it belongs.”
Inter have won 18 Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia seven times but have struggled since winning a Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia treble under Jose Mourinho in 2010. The club’s Chinese owners will be hoping Conte bring back the team’s golden days.
“I am sure Antonio Conte is one of the best coaches.
“I am sure he will help us to reach our target … to make this club one of the best in the world again.” Inter chairman Steve Wang said .
