Ivan Toney has seized control of the Saudi Pro League Golden Boot race following a clinical hat-trick. The England international inspired Al Ahli to a dominant 4-1 victory over Al Najma on Thursday night. Consequently, Matthias Jaissle’s side have moved level on points with league leaders Al Hilal.
The 29-year-old striker displayed his full predatory range during a ruthless individual performance. He opened his account from close range by tapping home a precise cross to settle early nerves. Shortly after, Toney doubled his tally with a crisp volley at the far post. His movement off the ball consistently baffled the Al Najma defence throughout the ninety minutes.
Crucially, the former Brentford man also showcased his character after a rare lapse from the penalty spot. His trademark relaxed effort was saved, and he failed to convert the subsequent rebound. Nevertheless, Toney remained undeterred when presented with a second opportunity from twelve yards. He coolly dispatched the spot-kick to secure his third match ball of the campaign.
Ronaldo Trails as Toney Eyes World Cup Spot
The result leaves Cristiano Ronaldo facing a significant deficit in the race for individual honours. The Al Nassr captain has dominated the scoring charts for the past two seasons in the Gulf. However, Toney now boasts 23 goals for the season, five clear of the Portuguese legend. Ronaldo currently sits on 18 strikes alongside Al Qadsiah forward Julián Quiñones.
Meanwhile, the veteran striker has only recently returned to action following a dispute with the Public Investment Fund. Toney has capitalised on this absence to cement his status as the league’s most lethal finisher. Aside from personal accolades, Toney remains focused on a potential recall to the England national team. He hopes these prolific displays will catch the eye of Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel.
The striker told Sky Sports News that representing England at the World Cup remains a primary dream. He believes consistent scoring provides his best chance of securing a place on the plane. Conversely, his immediate focus returns to the domestic title race alongside teammates Riyad Mahrez and Édouard Mendy. Al Ahli appear increasingly capable of toppling Al Hilal if Toney maintains this scintillating form.
