Musiala stars as Germany seal knockout spot with Hungary win

Jamal Musiala’s first-half goal helped Germany to a 2-0 victory over Hungary, securing their place in the Euro 2024 knockout stage with a game to spare. The Bayern Munich starlet’s impressive display saw him net his second goal of the tournament, a powerful strike that left Hungary’s goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

The Hungarians were left fuming as they believed Ilkay Gundogan had fouled defender Willi Orban in the build-up to the goal. Despite their protests, VAR upheld the on-field decision, leaving Musiala to celebrate exuberantly in front of the disgruntled Hungarian fans.

Hungary fought back valiantly, nearly equalizing on the stroke of halftime with Roland Sallai’s header, only to be denied by a VAR offside ruling. Instead, Germany extended their lead in the second half when an unmarked Gundogan calmly slotted past Peter Gulacsi.

While not as dominant as their opening 5-1 demolition of Scotland, Germany showcased flashes of their attacking flair and composure. Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai threatened on several occasions for Hungary, forcing a fine save from Manuel Neuer and testing the German defence with his set-piece prowess.

Hungary’s performance was commendable despite the loss, particularly their determined defensive display and sporadic attacking threat. However, this defeat leaves them with an uphill battle to qualify, needing a victory over Scotland in their final group match.

Hungary manager Marco Rossi voiced his frustrations after the game, criticizing the referee’s decisions and the use of VAR: “I’ve never complained in my career as a coach… but what the referee did tonight – I mean, come on. It’s something that I think even the Germans have seen – the referee had double standards. The VAR at this level didn’t say anything.”

With six points from two games, Germany has secured their place in the last 16 and could clinch Group A with a win or draw against Switzerland on Sunday. Meanwhile, Hungary must overcome its disappointment and focus on the crucial encounter with Scotland if it hopes to progress in the tournament.
