Jeremy Doku: The Rise of Manchester City’s Most Dangerous Winger

How a raw dribbling talent transformed into Manchester City’s most unstoppable winger

Jeremy Doku has always had magic in his boots. From the age of 15, scouts across Europe talked about his electric dribbling and fearless style. But raw talent alone isn’t enough at the top level and for years, Doku struggled to find the perfect balance between flair and smart decision-making.

This season, everything finally clicked. Against Liverpool, in a heavyweight Premier League showdown, Doku delivered the kind of performance that announces a player to the world.

The Game That Changed Everything

Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Liverpool wasn’t just another victory,  it was a statement, and Doku was the one holding the pen. He completed 7+ dribbles, won multiple duels, created three big chances, and even tested the goalkeeper with three shots on target.
These are numbers only one player had achieved in the Premier League since 2019, Eden Hazard. But Hazard did it against West Ham. Doku did it against the defending champions, fresh from beating Real Madrid. This was not a lucky day. This was control, confidence, and maturity.

From Super-Sub to Guardiola’s First Choice

When Doku first arrived at City for £55.5 million, many wondered if he would fit into Guardiola’s strict, structured style.

In his first seasons, he flashed brilliance but lacked consistency:

  • 3 goals and 7 assists on average across the Premier League

  • A spell of 10 games without contributing a goal

  • Only one Champions League start

He was often seen as an impact sub, someone who could change a game for 15 minutes but not control it for 90. But this season? He has featured in 16 of City’s 17 matches, starting 11, and is now one of Guardiola’s most trusted attackers.

Learning the Pep Way Without Losing the Doku Magic

Pep Guardiola publicly admitted Doku would “never be a top scorer”, but he also praised his hunger to improve. The difference today is Doku now knows when to dribble, when to slow down, and when to release the ball. His signature skill, known as “the wand”,  leaves defenders guessing as he waves his foot over the ball before exploding in the opposite direction.

Doku himself explained the biggest change in his life, he said he now plays “without fear or doubt”, crediting his faith after his baptism in September. He also praised his teammates for pushing him daily and giving him the belief that he can dominate any game.

The Premier League’s New Nightmare for Defenders

Today, Jeremy Doku is the winger no defender wants to face. Direct, explosive, unpredictable, but now also smart, patient, and decisive. He always had the talent. But now he has the maturity, the timing, and the confidence to turn games on his own. If this is the new Jeremy Doku, the Premier League might have a new unstoppable force on the wing, and Manchester City might have found their next great superstar.
