Juventus sack coach Igor Tudor after eight-match winless run

Juventus have dismissed head coach Igor Tudor after a winless run of eight matches in all competitions, the Serie A club announced in a statement on Monday.

The decision came the day after a 1-0 league defeat to Lazio, which marked the club’s third consecutive loss. Juventus confirmed that Massimo Brambilla, head coach of the reserve (Next Gen) team, will take charge of the first team on an interim basis.

“Juventus FC announces that it has today relieved Igor Tudor of his duties as coach of the men’s first team, along with his staff,” the club statement read.

Tudor, who was appointed in March to replace Thiago Motta, had guided the club to a fourth-place finish last season, securing qualification for the Champions League.

The team began the current campaign by winning its first three league games, but its form collapsed last month. The eight-match winless streak included five successive draws followed by three losses in the last week to Como, Real Madrid in the Champions League, and Sunday’s defeat at Lazio.

The poor run has seen Juventus drop to eighth in the Serie A table, six points behind leaders Napoli. The team has failed to score in its last four matches.

Speaking after the loss to Lazio, Tudor acknowledged the team’s struggles. “I think we prepared for the match in the right way, but we’re still missing something,” he told reporters. “There’s no need to dramatise the situation, we’re all responsible for this difficult period.”

Tudor, a former centre-back who won two Serie A titles as a player with Juventus, was the club’s first foreign manager since Didier Deschamps in the 2006-07 season.

The dismissal marks the first time Juventus has changed a manager before November since 1969, when Luis Carniglia was replaced by Ercole Rabitti.

Brambilla’s first match as interim manager will be at home against Udinese on Wednesday.
