Relegation-bound Leicester City ended an eight-game losing streak and scored their first Premier League goals in 885 minutes as Caleb Okoli’s late equalizer secured a hard-earned 2-2 draw away at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, April 12th. The result significantly damages Brighton’s ambitions of qualifying for European competition next season.
Brighton took the lead just past the half-hour mark through a João Pedro penalty, awarded after Simon Adingra’s shot struck the arm of Leicester defender Conor Coady. However, Leicester responded quickly. Seconds after Adingra hit the crossbar for Brighton, Stephy Mavididi capitalized on a defensive error by Lewis Dunk to beat goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen in the 38th minute, ending the Foxes’ long goal drought stretching back to January 26th. Brighton’s Matt O’Riley also hit the woodwork before halftime, while Kasey McAteer forced a save from Verbruggen.
Pedro restored Brighton’s lead ten minutes into the second half with his second penalty of the game, awarded after Luke Thomas fouled O’Riley.
Leicester City, however, continued to battle. Patson Daka was denied by Verbruggen before Okoli, starting in place of the injured Wout Faes, powered home a diving header from Bilal El Khannouss’s free-kick for a late equalizer. El Khannouss almost snatched a dramatic win for the visitors, but his curling effort struck the woodwork in the closing stages.
Leicester Show Grit, Brighton Stumble
While the point does little to alter Leicester’s dire situation – they remain second from bottom, 14 points from safety with only six games left – it provides a morale boost after a dreadful run. “The season couldn’t end like this… we broke that cycle today,” said manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.
For Brighton, the draw extends their winless run to three matches and sees them drop to ninth place, seven points adrift of the potential European spots. Manager Fabian Hürzeler, missing suspended defender Jan Paul van Hecke and the injured Kaoru Mitoma, was critical of his side’s performance. “Very disappointed… very frustrating because it was not a mature performance, we were too naive,” he told BBC Match of the Day. “We didn’t deserve more… We have to show a reaction because this cannot continue.” Brighton face a difficult trip to Brentford next.
