Liverpool advance in Carabao Cup after 3-2 win at Brighton

Defending champions Liverpool advance to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals following a 3-2 victory at Brighton, with Cody Gakpo’s double leading the way.

The match burst into life after a subdued first half when Gakpo opened the scoring in the 46th minute with a spectacular strike, cutting inside before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the net.

Liverpool goalkeeper Vítezslav Jaros, making his first start for the club, produced a crucial save to deny Simon Adingra’s header as Brighton sought an immediate response. The hosts continued to press, with Evan Ferguson sending an effort over the bar.

The visitors missed a chance to extend their lead during a three-on-one counterattack when Gakpo’s pass to Dominik Szoboszlai was blocked by Brighton’s recovering defenders. However, Gakpo soon capitalized on Tariq Lamptey’s error to score his second, running clear into the box before finishing.

Brighton reduced the deficit through Adingra, who took advantage of a defensive mistake to make it 2-1. Luis Diaz restored Liverpool’s two-goal cushion in the 81st minute, before Lamptey’s deflected strike set up a tense finish.

The result secured Liverpool’s place in the last eight as they continue their defense of the trophy. Liverpool advance
