Liverpool moved to the brink of claiming the Premier League title after a late goal from substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold secured a 1-0 victory at Leicester City on Sunday, April 20th, a result which also confirmed the hosts’ relegation to the Championship.
Leicester, who needed a win to keep their slim survival hopes alive, held the league leaders for much of the game at the King Power Stadium. However, their resistance was broken in the 76th minute when Alexander-Arnold fired home after the ball fell to him following a goalmouth scramble.
The win means Liverpool, on 79 points with five games remaining, are now just one victory away from securing a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title. Arne Slot’s side could even be crowned champions as early as Wednesday if second-placed Arsenal (currently on 66 points) fail to beat Crystal Palace. If Arsenal win that match, Liverpool can secure the title themselves when they host Tottenham Hotspur next weekend.
For Leicester City, the defeat confirms their immediate return to the Championship after just one season back in the Premier League. They remain 19th with 18 points and cannot catch 17th-placed West Ham. The loss also marked an unwanted English top-flight record for the Foxes: their ninth consecutive home league game without scoring a goal.
