Lukaku Stars As Napoli Beat Como To Hold Serie A Top Spot

Romelu Lukaku delivered an outstanding performance for Napoli in their 3-1 victory over Como on Friday, scoring once and providing two assists. This win keeps Napoli at the top of Serie A for at least another week.

The Belgian striker set up Scott McTominay for his first Serie A goal just 25 seconds into the match. Lukaku then converted a penalty seven minutes into the second half and later assisted David Neres for Napoli’s third goal. The win extends Napoli’s lead in the league to four points, though Juventus could narrow the gap with a win against Cagliari on Sunday.

Lukaku has quickly adapted to life in Naples under Antonio Conte, scoring three times and providing four assists in five league appearances.

His contributions have been crucial in Napoli’s title challenge.

After the match, Lukaku spoke to Sky Sport Italia, saying, “I arrived late, but I’m already integrated, all thanks to my teammates, the technical staff and the fans. We have to continue like this, we’ve won again.” He also mentioned that he will miss Belgium’s upcoming Nations League matches to continue working at Napoli.

Lukaku acknowledged that the game wasn’t perfect, stating, “We also had moments in which, on the counterattack, we could have done better, but we have to review these situations to improve in the future.”

Como, despite the loss, put up a strong fight. Gabriel Strefezza equalized with a long-range strike, and Nico Paz hit the woodwork before halftime. The match remained competitive until Neres’ late goal sealed the win for Napoli.

Scott McTominay, who joined Napoli from Manchester United in the summer, has made an impressive start in Italian football. This was his second goal for Napoli, having also scored against Palermo in the Italian Cup last month.

Napoli remains unbeaten since their opening-day loss to Verona. Under Conte, they are showing form reminiscent of their Scudetto-winning season in 2023, a marked improvement from their disappointing campaign last year.

Como, backed by Indonesian tobacco company Djarum, currently sit 10th in the table with eight points. This marks an encouraging start to their first Serie A season in 21 years.
