Man City beat Chelsea to return to top four

Erling Haaland capitalized on a costly mistake from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to score the winning goal as Man City secured a 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium. The win lifts City back into the top four of the Premier League and extends their unbeaten league run to six matches.

Sanchez’s error came in the 63rd minute when he misjudged a long ball forward from Ederson. Haaland won the physical battle with Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah and chipped the ball over the stranded Sanchez for his 18th league goal of the season.

Phil Foden then sealed the victory for City with a clinical finish in the 87th minute, converting Haaland’s lay-off to score his fifth goal in four games.

Man City ‘s victory was overshadowed by a shaky debut from new signing Abdukodir Khusanov. The defender was at fault for Chelsea’s third-minute opener, heading the ball into the path of Nicolas Jackson, who set up Noni Madueke for a simple tap-in.

Khusanov also struggled with his positioning and decision-making throughout the first half, before being replaced by John Stones after the break.

Fellow new signing Omar Marmoush showed more promise, but was caught offside on several occasions, including when he put the ball in the net after Sanchez failed to hold Ilkay Gundogan’s shot.

Sanchez’s error proved to be the turning point in the match. The Chelsea goalkeeper has now made five mistakes leading to goals this season, the most in the Premier League. His inconsistency remains a concern for Chelsea, who have now gone 11 games without a win against City.

This defeat further dents Chelsea’s title hopes and leaves them battling for a top-four finish. Manager Enzo Maresca will be looking for more consistency from his team, particularly in defense, if they are to challenge for a Champions League spot.

City’s victory is a further sign of their resurgence after a difficult start to the season. They have now won three of their last four league matches and will be hoping to maintain their momentum in the coming weeks.
