Manchester United stunned Anfield with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool, ending a nine-year wait for a win at the iconic ground and piling pressure on Arne Slot’s struggling side.
The game couldn’t have started worse for Liverpool, as Bryan Mbeumo silenced the home fans inside two minutes. The Cameroonian forward latched onto Amad Diallo’s clever pass and coolly slotted past Alisson to give United a shock lead.
Liverpool dominated possession and created several chances, with Cody Gakpo hitting the post three times before finally equalising in the 78th minute. The Dutchman tapped in Federico Chiesa’s cross to bring the Reds level and reignite hope of a comeback.
But Manchester United, showing resilience and belief under manager Ruben Amorim, struck back late. Captain Bruno Fernandes floated a perfect delivery into the box, and Harry Maguire powered home a header in the 84th minute to secure all three points.
The result was met with jubilation from United players and fans alike. “It means everything,” said Maguire after the match. “We haven’t had enough days like this in recent years, and to come here and win means so much to everyone.”
United boss Amorim, who has faced intense scrutiny, earned a much-needed boost. Former captain Gary Neville hailed the result as “huge” and praised the team’s character, while ex-midfielder Michael Carrick called it “an incredible result for the club and the manager.”
For Liverpool, the defeat marks their fourth consecutive loss and their first home defeat in over 400 days. Captain Virgil van Dijk admitted the team had been “far too rushed” and urged calm: “We need to stay humble and keep working.”
The victory lifts Manchester United into the top half of the Premier League table, now ninth with 13 points from eight matches. Liverpool, meanwhile, drop to fourth with 15 points and will look to bounce back in their midweek Champions League trip to Eintracht Frankfurt.
