Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed the possibility of entering the transfer market for central defenders following devastating injury news regarding Wesley Fofana and Benoît Badiashile.
Fofana, who has endured a string of long-term injuries since his £70 million transfer from Leicester City in 2022, is now likely to miss the remainder of the 2024/2025 season.
“Initial assessments suggested a five-week absence, but further tests have revealed more serious damage,” Maresca stated. “We don’t know the exact timeline yet, but it’s a huge loss.”
Fofana has made only 32 appearances for Chelsea out of a possible 125 games in all competitions since his arrival, missing the entirety of the 2023/2024 season and playing just three months this campaign before his latest setback. Once touted as one of the brightest young defensive talents, the 23-year-old’s career has been marred by persistent injuries.
Chelsea’s defensive woes could force the club into a critical January transfer window to bolster their backline.
