Matthias Jaissle has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Eddie Howe as Newcastle United manager, with talks between the club and the German coach understood to be at an advanced stage.
According to Sky Sports News, the 38-year-old Al Ahli head coach is now the frontrunner to take over at St James’ Park following Howe’s departure. Discussions have progressed in recent days, although no agreement has yet been announced.
Jaissle has been in charge of Al Ahli since 2023 and guided the Saudi Pro League side to continental success during his time at the club. His appointment would also represent a move within Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which owns both Newcastle United and Al Ahli.
Newcastle have moved quickly to identify potential successors after Howe’s exit was confirmed. While Jaissle has emerged as the preferred option, Sky Sports News reports that Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna and Napoli head coach Antonio Conte were also included on the club’s managerial shortlist.
Jaissle has built a strong reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches, having previously enjoyed success with Red Bull Salzburg before moving to Saudi Arabia. Known for his progressive, high-intensity style of football, he has attracted interest from several clubs in recent years.
Newcastle are expected to finalise their managerial appointment as preparations continue for the new Premier League season. The Magpies will hope to move swiftly to provide clarity ahead of the start of the campaign after a disappointing 2025-26 season, which ended with a 12th-place finish.
While negotiations remain ongoing, Jaissle appears to be the club’s leading choice, with advanced talks suggesting Newcastle are closing in on appointing their next permanent manager.
