Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa to sign Morgan Rogers in a deal worth £117 million, with the England international now closing in on a move to Stamford Bridge.
The 23-year-old is expected to undergo a medical on Monday after returning from England duty at the 2026 World Cup. He has agreed a six-year contract, which also includes the option of a further 12 months, as Chelsea prepare for their first season under new head coach Xabi Alonso.
The transfer represents a landmark moment in the summer window. At £117 million, Rogers would become the most expensive English footballer in history, edging past the £116 million Manchester City agreed to pay for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer. It would also surpass Chelsea’s previous club-record outlay for Moisés Caicedo, eclipsing the fee the west London club paid to strengthen their midfield in 2023.
Morgan Rogers set for record Chelsea transfer
Chelsea have tracked Rogers for an extended period, but Arsenal were also strongly interested before the Blues accelerated negotiations. Reports indicate Alonso played a significant role in convincing the midfielder that Stamford Bridge was the right destination despite Chelsea missing out on European football last season.
The England international played a prominent role during the 2025-26 campaign, helping Villa lift the Europa League while also featuring regularly during England’s World Cup run. His versatility across the attacking line and ability to carry the ball through central areas are expected to add another dimension to Chelsea’s forward options.
His arrival also raises questions over Chelsea’s attacking balance, particularly alongside Cole Palmer. The pair know each other well from England duty, and Alonso now faces the challenge of integrating two of the country’s most creative players into the same side ahead of the new Premier League season.
